National Indigenous Peoples Day is coming this Sunday. This annual celebration has been held each June 21 since 1996. The EFC is working on a documentary about a momentous yet often forgotten Sacred Assembly that helped spark this special day. There is now a
trailer on Vimeo.com that can be shown to raise awareness.
National Indigenous Peoples Day was declared by Canada’s governor general in 1996, in part as a response to the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, and in part as a response to the 1995 Sacred Assembly called by Oji-Cree member of Parliament Elijah Harper and attended by 3,000 people.
The government keeps a
special webpage that lists local events Canadians can join to take part in National Indigenous Peoples Day.
Christians are people called to the ministry of reconciliation, and this day is an annual opportunity to build crosscultural awareness and relationships. Will you be joining in somehow?
One way would be to show this three-minute trailer that introduces some of the faith-based roots for this day and looks ahead to the release of the full
Sacred Seeds documentary
sometime next year.
