OTTAWA – Foster homes are urgently needed in Canada, says The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC) in its new video, Quality Fostering Matters. The free, six minute video is designed for use in churches and small groups. It’s released through the EFC’s AdoptionSunday.com initiative.
“There are more than 80,000 Canadian children who need safe and nurturing homes, and agencies that facilitate care are struggling to keep up.” says Bruce Clemenger, President of The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada. “Kids need secure, loving homes and there is more that churches and individual Christian families can do to provide them.”
The need
- Between 76,000 and 85,000 Canadian children and youth are now in foster care (Peter Dudding, Child Welfare League of Canada, 2012)
- In Ontario alone, one in 182 children are in the care of Children’s and Family Services (Ontario Provincial Children and Youth Advocate Report, May 2012)
- Children are being placed in hotels and overcrowded foster homes because there are not enough foster parents. (“Manitoba to move more children under care out of hotels,” The Globe and Mail, November 18, 2014)
“Christ calls us to care for the vulnerable,” continues Clemenger. “Canadian children in need of quality fostering care are extremely vulnerable children. ‘Quality Fostering Matters’ calls on churches to help.”
