New Alberta bill passes additional MAiD safeguards

Alberta has passed a bill that puts in place additional safeguards for euthanasia in their province. These safeguards include limiting MAiD to adults who are in their last year of life and requiring only patient-initiated discussions of MAiD. The EFC and others had recommended these limits in a consultation in December 2024, and the EFC commends Alberta for passing them. This is an example that other provinces could follow. For more information, see TheEFC.ca/AB18.

Podcast: Sacred Assembly and cultural baggage

Adam Kline, director of intercultural missions at the Free Methodist Church in Canada, and Jonathan Maracle, a Mohawk musician from Tyendinaga, reflected with Faith Today Podcast host Bill Fledderus about how our ethnic background can influence church practices and theology. Maracle's music career launched at an important event called Sacred Assembly back in 1995. He and Kline discussed how church understandings around Indigenous culture have changed over those years.

EFC concerned about overhaul of MAiD death review

The EFC has expressed concern about changes made in an overhaul of the MAiD Death Review Committee of the Chief Coroner of Ontario. The EFC has urged the Ontario Solicitor General to ensure there is a high bar for detailed, transparent, independent review of MAiD deaths in Ontario. Read the EFC’s letter.
